Pencemaran alam sekitar sudah menjadi lumrah di negara-negara maju. Pencemaran seolah-olah tidak dapat dielakkan jika terdapat sebarang aktiviti pembangunan di sesuatu tempat. Pencemaran boleh diklasifikasikan kepada beberapa beberapa keadaan seperti pencemaran udara, iklim, tanah dan air.
Pencemaran boleh memudaratkan kesihatan manusia. Pencemaran udara menyebabkan manusia bernafas dalam udara yang tidak bersih dan terdedah kepada penyakit berbahaya seperti asma. Pencemaran iklim pula mengakibatkan penipisan lapisan ozon di atmosfera dan mewujudkan kesan rumah kaca. Penipisan lapisan ozon menyebabkan cahaya ultra ungu matahari yang berbahaya kepada kulit manusia menembusi atmosfera. Kesan rumah kaca pula mengakibatkan suhu bumi meningkat sehingga boleh mencairkan ketulan air batu di kutub utara atau selatan. Akibatnya paras air laut akan meningkat.
Pencemaran juga boleh mengakibatkan hakisan dan tanah runtuh. Pencemaran tanah disebabkan oleh aktiviti pembalakan, pertanian dan juga pembinaan. Kawasan yang mempunyai kebarangkalian yang tinggi untuk terkena hakisan dan tanah runtuh ialah di kawasan tanah tinggi. Kejadian tanah runtuh amat berbahaya kerana boleh mengakibatkan kehilangan nyawa dan juga harta benda. Oleh itu, adalah kurang selamat bagi manusia membina rumah kediaman berhampiran dengan tanah tinggi.
Sumber air juga adalah sangat penting kepada kehidupan harian manusia. Manusia memerlukan air sebagai sumber minuman dan juga sumber protien. Sumber air yang tercemar menyebabkan air tersebut beracun dan tidak selamat diminum. Lebih malang lagi manusia kehilangan sumber protien kerana hidupan air seperti ikan akan mati. Keadaan ini mungkin disebabkan oleh aktiviti pembuangan sisa kumbahan, sisa toksik dan minyak kenderaan ke dalam parit, sungai atau laut.
Oleh itu, adalah menjadi tanggungjawab setiap manusia untuk memastikan keadaan pencemaran alam sekitar berada pada tahap yang minimum. Adalah malang jika kita menunggu sehingga keadaan menjadi parah ibarat telur di hujung tanduk baru kita hendak berusaha mengawalnya. Keadaan menjadi tidak berguna sekiranya nasi telah menjadi bubur.
